Social Media Revolution 2 [New Stats]

Here's a new update to the Social Media Revolution video. I have used this often to show the impact that social media has on our businesses, our lifestyle, and communications. I'm glad to see an update.

Based on the book Socialnomics by Erik Qualman.

I Won a Ped3-U Ipod Stand from Thought Out!

A few days ago Thought Out (thoughtout.biz) ran a contest on Twitter. They asked people to share their Twitter handle alongside the @thoughtout brand. I did so and found that I won a FREE Ped3-U stand from them!

(download)

They were very quick to ship this. I received it this afternoon; I though it would be nice to share the un-boxing event with you.

According to their site:

The PED3-U universal stand holder works with any bare device or a device with a case or skin like the iPhone, iPod, Blackberry, Droid, Palm, Motorola, Smartphones and more. In portrait view or landscape the PED3-U is a fast and simple stand with protected over cupped holding fingers to accommodate any device while keeping it securely in the stand. Like no other stand, the heavy stable platform shape is made from one solid piece of steel in the USA. Keeping your cable where it belongs can be frustrating and this important, that is why we used our Thought Out exclusive split back™ cable management design.

P.S. I absolutely appreciate the new upload and layout interface that Posterous launched today. It rocks.

Firefighter Fired Over Facebook Post of Virtual Firefighter Video: Firefighter Nation

Firefighter Fired Over Facebook Post of Virtual Firefighter Video

COLLETON COUNTY, SC - A Colleton County paramedic and firefighter was fired over a video he posted on Facebook.

On February 11, Jason Brown was called into the director's office and questioned about the video he posted the previous night.

The Facebook post takes you to a YouTube-like site, where a video almost three minutes in length shows an exchange between two cartoon characters at a hospital.

One is a doctor, the other a paramedic.

In a letter of dismissal Brown provided, Colleton County Fire-Rescue Director Barry McRoy said, "You [Brown] displayed poor judgment in producing a derogatory video depicting a member of this department with a physician which is implied to be at Colleton Medical Center."

"There was no malicious attack to anybody involved personally or countywide or any certain department ever," said Brown, who spent two hours making what he described as a text-to-movie video.

On the web site xtranormal.com, you can create characters and even make them look like you. Users can type in a script and the cartoon-like character will say what you write.

"I'm not trying to make any doctor or any nurse look stupid," Brown said.

He said he wasn't even talking about Colleton Medical. He only used the name of a doctor who works at that hospital because he had recently seen him at a party.

It was supposed to be a funny, exaggerated and an almost unbelievable story of real life on-the-job experiences, Brown said.

"It's just general things that go on in the day-to-day business of us running calls within any fire department, any EMS," he added.

The dismissal letter also said, "This video has created an embarrassing situation for this department, our public image and the cooperative relationship we enjoy with Colleton Medical Center. It reflects poorly on you and Colleton County."

Brown appealed the decision, but his appeal was denied.

[See the rejection of appeal letter (pdf).]

Brown never meant any harm, he said.

"If I knew it was going to give me this much headache, I never would have made it in the first place," he added.

Brown said he was told his video was racist because the cartoon character playing the doctor role was African-American and during one of the exchanges the character said, "I don't want to lose my job and go back to being a janitor."

"That was never, ever in my actions or even thoughts when I made the video," Brown said.

When making the video, a black doctor was the only option offered, he added.

Getting fired was a little overboard, he said.

McRoy wouldn't give details about the Brown's firing because he said he couldn't discuss personnel matters.

But he said the Facebook incident wasn't the only reason Brown was fired.

Brown said he has never been seriously reprimanded and points to the dismissal letter as proof the Facebook post was the only reason he was fired.

If asked to take down the post, he would have done it and that would have been the end, he said.

Brown said after he was fired, he was escorted to the station where he returned all his gear, while two officers supervised him.

"I felt like a criminal," he said.

Prior to working at Colleton County Fire-Rescue for three and a half years, he worked at Berkeley County EMS and Goose Creek City Fire.

He said he left those two places because Colleton County paid more.

Skyfire Browser

This is what I've been using as my primary browser on my new HTC Tilt 2 phone. I'm not a fan of Internet Explorer in any fashion, mobile not withstanding. Interestingly enough, my phone came loaded with Opera Mobile as the default browser. It doesn't run. I have yet to have successful page loads with it.

I downloaded Skyfire immediately after getting this phone (I had it on my Blackjack II) and set it to default. If you want to run web video (almost ALL) and audio -- and have a Windows Mobile or Symbian device -- this is the browser for you.

America Rising

(download)

This video has been posted and available for download at a website by Joe Searles. He states that he is a conservative independent. He says:

Whoa. This video..is powerful. It hit me hard. It echoes the sentiments that many of us have been feeling over the past year.

The “America Rising” video was originally created by former YouTube user “buckrush” and then uploaded by several other users. This video has been repeatedly attacked by Obots and removed by the seemingly complicit YouTube countless times.

If you would like to download and share this video on any of your site, you can download it here.

This coming election I plan to vote against all incumbents, regardless of party. I will, however, vote for independents and Libertarians whenever the option is available. If you have options in your own community, region, state, etc. it might be wise for you to consider a grass roots approach to voting. Move the bipartisan, big government machine out of office. Put the power of our nation back in the hands of the people. Quit expecting handouts from people that truly don't care about your own interest. Protect YOUR liberties and your right to do what is best for your family.

The Libertarian Party has a campaign running right now to encourage members to run for office. It is called Operation ELECT-US. Please take a look.

Win or lose, every vote for a Libertarian makes a difference.

The biggest advantage of being a political party is that we can do something no other organization can do: in most states, we can nominate candidates and put their names directly on the ballot. That’s a substantial power, and we want to take full advantage of it.

Here are a few of the ways your candidacy can make a difference:

1. Give voters a choice. Many Republicans and Democrats run for Congress unopposed! How disgusting! Whether or not your incumbent runs unopposed, if you run for Congress as a Libertarian, you guarantee that voters will have a better option— and many voters will take advantage of that option.

2. Get free media coverage. There is no simpler way to get media attention than filing as a candidate. Some news outlets cover Libertarians more than others, but you’d be surprised—if you answer their calls, they are often happy to give you some attention. Reporters get tired of hearing the same old Democrapublican nonsense, just like everyone else.

3. Get other free publicity. The League of Women Voters provides most areas of the United States with free voter guides. These guides generally give comments from all candidates, so it’s an excellent opportunity to express Libertarian positions. You can also attend candidate forums. Many Libertarian candidates have expressed surprise when people walk up to them after a forum and say, "I really enjoyed hearing your point of view!"

4. Help our party organization. It’s very valuable to our party when we have a lot of candidates. It increases our media coverage, it excites our members, it increases our vote totals, and it increases our chances of getting Libertarians elected.

5. Influence close races. In close elections, Libertarian candidates often control enough votes to decide who the winner will be. In those situations, the Democrat and Republican are both pressured to "move Libertarian" in order to court Libertarian voters.

6. Satisfy your conscience. Running for office can make you feel less angry and hopeless about politics, because you know that you have stepped up to make a change. Ultimately, it’s up to the voters whether they choose to vote for you—but it’s up to you whether to offer them a Libertarian choice.

Becoming a candidate for Congress is especially easy, because you don’t have to fill out campaign finance paperwork if you spend under $5,000 on your campaign. You also don’t technically have to live in the district you’re running for, which can be important in states where several good candidates happen to live in the same district.

If you want to be a candidate for Congress, or if you just want more information, send an email tocampaigns@lp.org, or call 1-800-ELECT-US. Win or lose, every vote for a Libertarian candidate makes a difference.
